BMW’s latest plug-in hybrids will be launched in Germany this November and offer up to 62 miles of electric-only range
The 2024 BMW 5-Series lineup is expanding as two new plug-in hybrids are launching in Germany this November.
Kicking things off is the 530e, which features a plug-in hybrid powertrain that consists of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, a 19.4 kWh battery pack, and an electric motor that is integrated into an eight-speed automatic transmission.
This setup gives the car a combined output of 295 hp (220 kW / 299 PS) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque. Thanks to the powerful and efficient powertrain, the model can accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 6.3 seconds, hit a top speed of 143 mph (230 km/h), and travel 54-62 miles (93-103 km) on electricity alone in the WLTP cycle.

The 550e xDrive is similar, but it benefits from a more powerful electric motor, a 3.0-liter inline-six, and all-wheel drive. They enable the car to produce 483 hp (360 kW / 489 PS) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque.
The dash to 62 mph (100 km/h) drops to 4.3 seconds, while the top speed climbs to an electronically limited 155 mph (250 km/h). However, range takes a hit as the 550e can only travel 49-56 miles (83-90 km) on electricity alone.
When it comes time to charge, owners will be thankful that BMW doubled the maximum charging capacity to 7.4 kW. This means the battery can be fully replenished in as little as 3 hours and 15 minutes, although you’re looking at nearly 12 hours with a conventional household outlet.
Pricing starts at €65,300 in Germany and climbs to €77,300 for the 550e xDrive Sedan. The latter is slated to come to America next spring and be priced from $74,795.
