The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has revised its Class XII Political Science textbook to incorporate the developments arising from the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Ram Janmabhoomi movement.
The revision pertains to Chapter 8, ‘Recent Developments in Indian Politics’, which lists the Ayodhya movement as one of five key “recent developments” in Indian politics since 2006-07.
Previous version: “What is the legacy of the Ram Janambhoomi movement and the Ayodhya demolition for the nature of political mobilisation?”
Current version: This has been updated to: “What is the legacy of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement?”
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has explained the reason for the revision on its website. According to NCERT, this change aims to align the initial questions with recent internal revisions made within the chapter itself.
“Content is updated as per the latest developments in politics. Text on Ayodhya issue has been thoroughly revised because of the latest changes brought by the Supreme Court’s Constitutional bench verdict and its widespread welcoming reception,” it has said on its website.
Apart from the introduction of the Supreme Court’s judgment pertaining to the Ram Janambhoomi movement, the NCERT has also dropped several references to the demolition of the Babri Masjid and Hindutva in the Class 12 Political Science textbook.
Previous version: In the original chapter, a four-page section on the Ayodhya dispute read: “… A number of events culminated in the demolition of the disputed structure at Ayodhya (known as Babri Masjid) in December 1992. This event symbolized and triggered various changes in the politics of the country and intensified debates about the nature of Indian nationalism and secularism. These developments are associated with the rise of the BJP and the politics of ‘Hindutva’.”
Revised version: According to the NCERT, the content is updated as per the latest developments in politics. The revised version reads, “… the centuries old legal and political dispute over the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya started influencing the politics of India which gave birth to various political changes. The Ram Janmabhoomi Temple Movement, becoming the central issue, transformed the direction of the discourse on secularism and democracy. These changes culminated in the construction of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya following the decision of the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court (which was announced on November 9, 2019).”
The National Council of Educational Research and Training has informed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) about the revision of school textbooks for the upcoming academic year. The revised syllabus will be rolled out alongside new books in the 2024-25 session, with students expected to receive them within a month’s time.
