How to Change Resolutions on Your PS5

The PlayStation 5 has several resolutions to choose from, and you can pick the one that best suits your TV or monitor. However, it’s unclear how to change the resolution to get the best graphics performance out of the console – the PS5’s settings can be hard to navigate.

Luckily, changing the resolution of your PS5 is easy, and we’re going to show you how.

How Do I Change the Resolution on a PlayStation 5?

From your PlayStation 5’s dashboard, head to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. You’ll see that Resolution has been set to Automatic by default, meaning your PS5 will select the best resolution for your screen.

Now, highlight Resolution and hit the X button to bring up a dropdown with various resolutions on it. Then, highlight the resolution you want and hit the X button to select it.

Once you lock in the resolution, the screen will go blank for a moment. When the picture returns, it will be in the resolution you chose.

Should You Change Your PS5’s Resolution?

A higher resolution will make your games look prettier, but conventional wisdom should tell you that this means your PS5’s performance can take a hit.

For instance, when you enable Resolution Mode on PS5, the PS5 will favor the highest graphical output, which is usually 4K, at the expense of the frame rate. When playing in the PS5’s Performance Mode, on the other hand, the PS5 tries to keep a steady 60FPS, which means 4K might not be an option.

So if you prefer frame rate over graphics, then lowering your FPS can help maintain 60FPS, which can make the gameplay smoother and more responsive. But if you don’t mind a potential performance hit, then you can crank the resolution all the way to 2160p, and enjoy those pretty graphics.

There’s really no right or wrong option.

Choose the PS5 Resolution That Gives You the Best Experience

Most modern TVs and monitors support 1080 (Full HD), which is still an impressive graphical output. But if your display can support 4K and you’re a graphics buff, you know what to do to get your PS5 to output that resolution. As you can see, it’s pretty easy to do.
