Jake Knapp, who recently secured his first PGA Tour victory in Mexico just five days ago, has been given prime tee times for the first two rounds of the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches.
His playing partners for the first two days are none other than World No. 1 and 2012 Cognizant Classic champion Rory McIlroy, along with defending Cognizant Classic champion Chris Kirk.
Knapp started his week at PGA National with a solid 3-under 68, placing him tied for 30th, just four shots behind the leaders Chad Ramey and S.H. Kim.
McIlroy, acknowledging that he is in the latter stages of his career, stated, “Yeah, I would say I’m pretty close to the turn at this point, if not a little bit after. Maybe on the 10th green or 11th tee.”
McIlroy then outperformed Knapp, carding a 4-under 67. He is aiming to break Mark Calcavecchia’s record for the longest time between wins at the event, with Calcavecchia having gone 11 years (1987 and 1998) between his two victories at the tournament.
The Champion course at PGA National is a par-71 layout measuring 7,147 yards. The course is ranked No. 7 in Florida on Golfweek’s Best list of public-access courses and tied for No. 69 on the list of top resort courses in the U.S.
The purse for the Cognizant Classic is $9 million, with the winner receiving $1.62 million and 500 FedEx Cup points.
