5 exhibitions and dance shows this weekend July 20-21 in Hong Kong to catch

You’ll find yourself transported back to a time many refer to as the golden age of Cantopop.

“Soundtrack of Our Lives: Joseph Koo x James Wong x the Rise of Cantopop”, Duplex Studio, Block01, Tai Kwun, 10 Hollywood Road, Central, Daily, 11am-7pm. Until August 28.

2. Legible City Hong Kong at M+

Jeffrey Shaw, a leading figure in new-media art in Hong Kong, has partnered with one of the city’s most important writers, Dung Ka-cheung, to create a new version of his pioneering interactive artwork Legible City (1989-1991) for the M+ museum of visual culture.

The interactive work features Central and the western districts on Hong Kong Island in the 19th century, with all the buildings replaced by text taken from Dung’s novel “Hong Kong Type: A Love Letter Late for One Hundred and Fifty Years”.

On Friday evenings, visitors can travel around the virtual landscape on a special exercise bike in Found Space, their journeys live-streamed to the M+ facade.

“Legible City Hong Kong” (2024), M+ Found Space, M Plus, 38 Museum Drive, West Kowloon Cultural District, closed on Monday, Tuesdays to Thursdays and weekends 10am-6pm, Fridays 10am-10pm, Until October 6.

3. Blossoms – Solo Exhibition of Jin Yucheng

Chinese writer Jin Yucheng is best known for his novel Blossoms, which Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai has adapted into a popular television series.

Jin is also an accomplished artist. He started drawing when he was working in a factory at the age of 12, an interest that has persisted through his years working as an executive editor, as well as illustrator of his own novels.

The writer, who is in the city for the 2024 Hong Kong Book Fair, will also meet fans on Friday at the show opening from 5.00-7.30pm.

4. Modern dance show Our City by HKDance/FLSH

The three-day “Dynamic Dance Dialogue”, taking place from July 19-21 in Hong Kong Cultural Centre Studio Theatre, features dancers and choreographers from nine mainland Chinese cities and Hong Kong. They will present 10 dance pieces, with each performance inspired by a city’s folk culture and customs.

5. As If Snowing, City Contemporary Dance Company

Don’t miss the last three performances of As If Snowing, presented by the City Contemporary Dance Company. Veteran dancer Qiao Yang is marking her 60th birthday with this new work choreographed by Sang Jijia, and two former CCDC dancers are joining her on stage – Luo Fan and Kevin Mak. There will be a post-show talk following the performance on Saturday.
