Jack McCoy has officially retired from the courtroom. Sam Waterston made his final appearance in the episode of “Law & Order” that aired on Thursday, February 22nd.
After being convicted and defying the mayor’s orders not to question his son, he told ADA Nolan (Hugh Dancy) that he was resigning. Jack stated, “I’ve been contemplating this for some time. It’s time to step down.” He revealed that by going against the mayor’s wishes, he would face consequences in the upcoming election, ultimately leading to his defeat.
“He intends to ruin everyone who has crossed him, including you – especially you,” Jack warned. “If I resign now, the governor can appoint someone new – someone with integrity.”
Jack raised his glass for a toast, saying, “It’s been quite a journey.” The episode concluded with him outside, gazing at the courthouse.
Waterston, 83, joined the original series in 1994 and starred until its end in 2010. He reprised his role in 2022 when the show was revived for its 21st season. He also portrayed Jack McCoy in spinoffs such as “Law & Order: SVU” and “Law & Order: Trial by Jury,” as well as the movie “Exited: A Law & Order Movie.”
In a statement released earlier this month, Waterston expressed his gratitude for the audience and reflected on his departure from the show. He mentioned his excitement for what lies ahead and his gratitude for the amazing journey with the “Law & Order” series.
Tony Goldwyn will be taking over the role of district attorney. He shared photos from the set on Instagram, acknowledging the challenge of filling McCoy’s shoes. Goldwyn will make his debut as DA Nicholas Baxter in the episode airing on March 14th.
