Veteran Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has been vocal about continuing his playing career beyond this season.

It now looks as if Khune will have to leave Chiefs if he wants to prolong his playing career.

Over the years, Khune has been a stalwart for Chiefs, being their number-one goalkeeper for well over a decade. In recent years, however, the 36-year-old has been plagued by injuries and lack of form, which have seen him dropped. With the club failing to find a regular goalkeeper to take over, they have often called on him repeatedly.

He recently returned with a man of the match performance for the Carling All Stars XI. The country got to see yet another glimpse of what he is still capable of in front of the sticks. With Chiefs making a statement that Khune will retire, he came out to say he isn’t ready to do so. Therefore, he might have to find another club next season.

Even with that being said, it was expected that Khune would return from his suspension last month. However, Chiefs team manager Bobby Motaung revealed the veteran keeper was still serving his suspension. In recent times, he has even been linked with a move to Sekhukhune United, as a renewal of his contract looks unlikely.

But now according to The Citizen, Khune may have accepted his fate at Chiefs, and will stick to the original plan.

“With the way things are looking at the moment, it doesn’t seem like he will be given a new contract. That is why he is thinking about taking a new role at the club. That likely to get into coaching in the development teams. That guy has been at the club for a very long time and his blood is gold and black, that’s why it will be difficult for him to play for another team. He has previously stated that he wants to play for many years and probably go until he is in his 40s, but it doesn’t seem like it will happen, especially at Chiefs. Another thing is that some clubs are trying to sign him, and they are closely monitoring his situation at the club.” Said the source.

It remains to be seen what eventually happens between Chiefs and Khune at the end of the season.
