Barbra Streisand graciously accepted the Life Achievement Award at the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday (Feb. 24) and delivered a heartfelt speech. She shared her lifelong love for movies, which began as an escape from her mundane upbringing in Brooklyn.
The ceremony took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, where Streisand had performed her first major concert back in 1963, as Jennifer Aniston revealed. Notable for her achievements, Streisand had won three Grammy Awards at the same venue in the past. Bradley Cooper also joined in to present the award.
Streisand reminisced about her teenage years in Brooklyn dreaming of becoming an actress while indulging in movies and ice cream. She recalled a significant experience watching “Guys and Dolls” at the Loew’s theater, where she was captivated by the colors, sets, and the actor Marlon Brando.
Despite not fitting the typical mold of actresses, Streisand pursued her dream, defying the advice to learn typing. She reflected on her journey and how she expanded the conventional idea of a movie star.
Streisand credited William Wyler and Harry Stradling for their open-mindedness and support during her film debut in “Funny Girl.” She highlighted the importance of collaboration and learning through acting roles.
Acknowledging the escapism movies provide, Streisand emphasized the impact of storytelling and the role of actors in conveying narratives. She expressed admiration for the pioneers of the film industry who sought refuge from prejudice and turned dreams into reality.
Reflecting on her passion for film, Streisand shared her admiration for a French movie that reminded her of the beauty of storytelling. She concluded her speech with gratitude for the honor and appreciation for her colleagues in the industry.
The ceremony included a tribute to Streisand’s iconic film moments, showcasing her talent across various films, including musical favorites like “Funny Girl,” “The Way We Were,” and “A Star Is Born.” Cooper, who directed a remake of “A Star Is Born,” introduced Streisand with respect.
Throughout the years, many of Streisand’s co-stars have been honored with the SAG Life Achievement Award, highlighting her lasting impact on the industry. The event was streamed live on Netflix, recognizing the outstanding work of talented individuals in the industry.
