WATCH: Mandurah local captures ‘UFO’ on CCTV; Perth Observatory confirms it was a meteor

Mandurah locals were left asking is it a bird? is it a plane? is it Superman? last week after an unidentified flying object shot across the sky.

The incident was odd enough it was shared to Strange Encounters Perth a Facebook group dedicated to sightings of UFOs, Yowies and big cats.

CCTV video posted to Strange Encounters Perth showed the object trace across the sky on February 22.

Witnesses said they were looking south from Mandurah when they spotted the “UFO” streak across the sky.

The earth-bound object was described as having “awesome colours” and put on an impressive display.

There were guesses that the object was a satellite re-entering orbit.

One woman even suggested that: “UFOs can disguise themselves as meteors or shooting stars to avoid being targeted”.

However, Perth Observatory confirmed that it was very much an identified object and even caught it on their own cameras.

Matt Woods from the Observatory said it was “definitely” a meteor.

Meteorite hunters will be disappointed though as the object burnt up in Earth’s atmosphere.

Meteors are more common than little green men, with a team at the University of Manchester estimating that about 17,000 fall to Earth every year.

However, many are so small that they can’t be seen passing through the atmosphere.
