Ferris Coffee to close in downtown Holland

HOLLAND — After three years of consolidation in Holland, Ferris Coffee is closing its Eighth Street location, following the shutdown of two Grand Rapids storefronts.

The announcement was made on social media on Wednesday, Feb. 28.

“With heavy hearts, we announce the upcoming closure of our beloved Holland café on March 23,” the post read. “While it was a difficult decision, we are proud of the community we have built over the years in the historic downtown district.”

“Although it marks the end of an era for us at this location, we are excited for a new business to make a positive impact on the community.”

Ferris Coffee CEO Mark VanTongeren explained to The Sentinel that the lease for the location is expiring this year and with a renewed focus on the roastery aspect of the business, the decision to close was made.

“Our strategy in the past involved having coffee shop outposts to support our brand growth,” VanTongeren said. “As we pursue new growth opportunities, it’s time to shift our focus.”

VanTongeren expressed gratitude towards the employees and the Holland community for their support since the beginning.

“The team in Holland has been amazing in executing our mission of creating moments of joy for people to connect,” he said. “They have a lot to be proud of.”

The company’s Grand Rapids headquarters will remain open, including a coffee shop.

“We are committed to being a positive influence in West Michigan.”

The location at 55 E. Eighth St. was formerly JP’s, which Ferris acquired in 2015. After undergoing renovations, the east side reopened in April 2018, with the west side revealed later in a partnership with Michigan Awesome during the holiday season. The space was later used to exhibit local artwork before being put up for lease in 2021.

Big Fish Outlet opened in the space later that year.

According to property records, the building at 55 E. Eighth St. is still owned by 2 OUT OF 3 LLC, which is owned by Jack Groot, the founder of JP’s.
