Coogee Live to host 70 merfolk this weekend as Australia’s Largest Mermaid Migration hits City of Cockburn’s Coogee Beach

What has two arms, two eyes and no legs?

One of the many mermaids expected to hit the pristine shores of Coogee Beach this Saturday, as Australia’s Great Mermaid Migration makes a splash at Coogee Live’s free community festival.

Dubbed “one the biggest gatherings of mermaids and mermen in the world”, the rare spectacle will take place from 10am near Coogee Beach jetty and offers a rare opportunity for mere mortals to cross paths with the typically ocean-dwelling creatures.

Your local paper, whenever you want it.

Mermaid Renee Wingfield frequents Perth’s many pools and beaches and is excited to share an insight into the lives of merpeople during the event’s second annual migration.

“It’s a lot of splashy fun,” she said.

“The main mission is to spread joy and keep that delight going for generations to come.”

Like humans, to preserve their complexions in the sunshine, “it’s really important that as we’re only half fish, we still wear sunscreen,” she admitted.

While attendees are encouraged to dress up in their most sparkly costumes, Mermaid Renee expects at least 70 of the magical creatures to migrate to the City of Cockburn’s coastline.

For fans keen to blow bubbles and snap a pic with the elusive creatures, her advice is simple — don’t be late.

“To keep the magic alive, mermaids need to disappear and head back to the water,” she insisted.

“Make sure you arrive a little bit early”.

The migration — organised by live entertainment provider Fliptease — is just one of the many family-friendly activities this weekend.

City of Cockburn Mayor Logan Howlett lauded the event’s variety and jam-packed schedule.

“There’s art, entertainment, song, dance, sustainability, mindfulness and all manner of activities that are free and I encourage the whole community to participate in Coogee Live,” he said.

With unique offerings including Flamenco dancing, free scuba diving lessons and, of course, mermaid meet and greets, attendees are encouraged to consult the event schedule to organise their itinerary.

Coogee Live takes place this Saturday and Sunday at Coogee Beach.
