Former UGC chairman Dhirendra Pal Singh appointed chancellor of TISS

MUMBAI: Former UGC chairman and educationist Dhirendra Pal Singh has been appointed as the chancellor of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), according to an order issued by the Union Ministry of Education on Saturday. With a career spanning close to four decades, Singh has held distinguished roles such as vice-chancellor at three universities, including Banaras Hindu University, and served as director of NAAC.His tenure as chancellor will extend for five years from assuming office.
Singh expressed his commitment to enhancing the quality of education at TISS, fostering a research-oriented culture, and motivating faculty members. Upon assuming office, he intends to assess the institute’s operations comprehensively. With significant experience in international programs, Singh has visited countries such as the UK, USA, Germany, France, Norway, Denmark, China, Australia, and Singapore for academic endeavors.
Moreover, Singh has held various academic leadership roles within India’s higher education sector and contributed to national and international educational initiatives. Notably, he served on the Central Advisory Board of Education and played a pivotal role in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Additionally, as the UGC chairman, he provided guidance to eight inter-university centers as the President of the Governing Council. Singh’s contributions to education have been recognized through accolades such as the Environment Leadership Award, Nation Builder Award, and Raja Balwant Singh Shiksha Samman.
