Esprit de Corps: Women Artists in Twin Cities Skateboarding

Eleven skateboarding artists are showcasing their art in a new exhibition at the Pillar FORUM Café, in the skateboard-themed cafe’s gallery room, called the Golden Room Gallery.

Curated by skateboarder/artists Emily Landberg, Ellen Puls and Jeanelle Carufel, the show offers a window into the small but mighty niche of the local skateboarding world. Landberg started skateboarding six years ago, and now is a “key-holder” at the Hiawatha Bowl, a private space for skateboarding in an old warehouse. Other women featured in the show skate at 3rd Lair Skate Park and Skate Shop, Gateway Park in Saint Paul and other public spaces.

Landberg will be showing her own work in the exhibition, including a Goddess-looking character made from grip tape and a painting depicting a near-death experience with the head of Medusa. Natalie Andron, meanwhile, will show photorealistic drawings, while Trista Hendrickson will be showing abstract works “filled with rich peaks and pastels,” Landberg tells me.

“You just want to eat them up— they’re candy for your eyes,” she says.

Co-curator Ellen Puls transforms discarded objects into mosaics, while Jeanelle Carufel channels grief and the macabre in collage works.
