NEW DELHI: Data revealed in an RTI reply indicated that 51.63 percent of students failed in the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) 18 exam. The Bar Council of India (BCI) informed that out of 1,44,014 students who appeared for the exam, 69,646 passed. In response to a Right to Information application filed by Shibu Babu, it was disclosed that 1,48,781 students took the exam held on December 10 last year, with 74,368 failing and over 4,700 absent.The AIBE 18 result for 2024 was declared on March 26, 2024.
According to a news portal, Career360, BCI mentioned that the exam, typically conducted twice a year, faced scheduling disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Regarding the AIBE 18 answer key and results, BCI clarified that after withdrawing seven questions, the results were based on 93 questions instead of 100. Consequently, the passing marks for the General and OBC categories were set at 45 percent of 93 marks (42 marks), and for the SC, ST, and disabled categories at 40 percent of 93 marks (37 marks). This decision, taken by a high-level monitoring committee, was approved by the council.
The BCI also addressed queries about the absence of candidates’ scores on their AIBE scorecards, stating that such information does not fall under the RTI Act’s definition of information. Additionally, the council did not provide data on the pass percentages and failure rates of candidates across 24 state bar councils, referencing a Supreme Court decision which stated that public authorities are not required to furnish information that involves drawing inferences or making assumptions. The BCI emphasized that while public authorities may voluntarily provide advice or opinions, this is not an obligation under the RTI Act.
