In a trial, 20 middle-aged blokes sat clothed in a magnetic chair as pulses were targeted at the groin, stimulating and strengthening muscles connected to the penis.

The men, who all had moderate or severe erectile dysfunction at the start, had the therapy for 30 minutes, twice a week for eight weeks.

By the end, one was cured and 14 finished with “mild to moderate” dysfunction.

Dr Daniel Galimberti, who led the Argentine study, said muscle strengthening could be a long-term fix, whereas pills like Viagra last only for a night.

He added: “For most men with ED, the ideal result is a lasting solution, which is something that this can potentially accomplish.”

He said stronger pelvic-floor muscles would increase blood pressure in the penis and help blood stay there.

Patients may also “regain control” of their manhood by becoming more aware of the muscles.

The chair, dubbed Dr Arnold, already helps women strengthen their pelvic floor after childbirth, and people tackle incontinence.

Manufacturer Deka, which was involved in the study, said it could also help men with similar problems which are common after prostate surgery.

The NHS says erectile dysfunction is very common in men over 40 and tends to get worse with age.

Poor weight, diet and boozing raise the risk.
