APPLE’s new iPhone update is causing photos deleted years ago to reappear, users have reported.
An apparent bug in the new iOS 17.5 update has led to accounts of material, including nudes, magically resurfacing from the past.
The issue has blown up on social media, with many calling into question their trust of Apple as they accuse the company of a “privacy breach”.
One Reddit poster complained of NSFW “material” popping back up in recent photos despite being “permanently deleted years ago”.
The post, which kickstarted a thread on Tuesday, said: “Erm, so yeah. Very creepy. Thoroughly freaked out.
“Just completed the update. When in conversation with my partner, I went to send a picture and saw that the latest pictures were nsfw material we’d made years ago when we were living apart (covid etc).
“But WTF. It was permanently deleted. Years ago but magically it’s back??”
Talk of the bug has also erupted on X.
“We have no privacy. They have everything. Even deleted apparently,” a viral comment from account Majestic Memes said.
Another said: “Your delete button isn’t really a delete button. Scary.”
A post on tech blog site Mac Rumours listed several possible reasons for the mysterious photo phenomenon.
It said: “The reports could be down to an indexing bug, photo library corruption, or a syncing issue between local devices and iCloud Photos.
“Another possibility is that in attempting to fix a photo syncing bug that occurred in iOS 17.3, Apple has inadvertently caused a new syncing issue to occur that may involve iCloud backups.”
Apple hasn’t yet addressed the concerns.
The Sun reached out to Apple for comment.
