Yankees recall Yoendrys Gomez after Nick Burdi lands back on IL

SAN DIEGO — Nick Burdi’s hip issue has flared back up, just five games after returning from the injured list.

Burdi landed back on the 15-day IL Friday with right hip inflammation, the same injury that forced him to miss nearly a month earlier this season.

The Yankees recalled right-hander Yoendrys Gomez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before opening a series against the Padres at Petco Park.

Burdi had returned from the IL on May 10 and pitched in five games, his most recent one coming when he threw one-third of an inning in Thursday’s win over the Mariners.

The 31-year-old reliever owns a 1.86 ERA through 12 games this season, but this is now his second IL stint before Memorial Day.

Before signing with the Yankees this offseason, Burdi’s career had been sidetracked by a series of arm injuries, though now it is his hip that is causing him trouble.

By calling up Gomez, the Yankees protected themselves in the bullpen as they began a 10-day, nine-game West Coast road trip.

Gomez has been starting at Triple-A, throwing 72 pitches across four innings on Sunday.

The 24-year-old, who made his MLB debut as a reliever last September, has also been plagued by injuries throughout his career.
