The company behind Shelter Brewing Co says Mandurah’s western foreshore would become one of Australia’s premium waterfront precincts under their proposal for the prominent site.
Left Coast Leisure Group, who operate Shelter Brewing Co in Busselton, have been selected as the City of Mandurah’s preferred proponents for the western foreshore’s commercial site, currently leased by King Carnival.
The potential operators have proposed a $23 million development which they say will “prioritise, preserve and maintain the existing natural environment” and will see the western foreshore become one of the country’s “premium waterfront precincts”.
This will include a “family-friendly” restaurant and microbrewery overlooking the estuary, a 18-hole mini golf course with a cafe and a “family-first chocolate retail and hospitality offering” which will be focused on what they describe as a “premium chocolate experience”.
The proposed lease area will cover almost two acres, with the microbrewery and restaurant across 2500sqm while the mini golf course will span 4700sqm.
The development would operate seven days a week and is expected to attract 750,000 visitors annually and bring in an additional $30 million in tourist dollars each year.
Its construction is expected to create 400 jobs and will support 270 jobs while operating.
LCLG director Zeb Packard-Hair said the key aspects in planning the redevelopment were “sustainability, the natural attractions, families, locals and visitors”.
The community will now get to have their say on the proposal, with the Mandurah council voting at Tuesday night’s meeting to send the Western Foreshore Leisure Precinct Plan, which includes the commercial site proposal, and major land transaction for public advertising.
This will see an eight-week public consultation process allowing the community to give feedback on the plans, with the city to conduct targeted consultation pop-ups on the western foreshore as well as take feedback through its Mandurah Matters platform.
A report on the outcomes of the community engagement and a final master plan is expected to be presented to the council at their August meeting.
Mr Packard-Hair said LCLG expect to finalise their lease agreement with the city following the consultation period.
“We’re excited at this opportunity and can’t wait to see it progress over the coming months and years,” Mr Packard-Hair said.
“Once the City of Mandurah has completed their eight-week community consultation process and received feedback, we’ll be able to finalise our agreement with them.”
