BENGALURU: Open-book exams for practice in high schools to make students get familiarised with textbooks is one of the suggestions made by the Department of School Education and Literacy to improve performance of schools in SSLC exams.
The Educational Guidelines 2024-25, released by the department, also suggested 25-mark question papers for classes 8, 9 and 10 to be made of each section to be prepared.Students will be given a time frame and asked to use a textbook to find answers. This will help them cultivate the habit of reading and referring to textbooks regularly and they will also understand the importance of studying textbooks, it said.
The SSLC results fell to 74% this year, despite giving grace marks of 20%. Otherwise, the results are at 54%. The drop was attributed to curb rampant malpractice which was associated with SSLC exams.
The department has also recommended introducing surprise tests, which will be self-evaluated by the children to give them experience in both cracking exams and understanding how evaluation works. It also suggested a series of syllabus-based competitions like debate or essay competition so as to learn the concepts in an interesting manner.
After a series of mock exams, schools should hold remedial classes for low achievers. This could also be residential camps where they are guided to perform better. The top students, on the other hand, should be sent for a motivational camp at the taluk or district level and encouraged and guided to achieve ranks.
