Riveiro takes HUGE gamble with Orlando Pirates Nedbank Cup XI

Orlando Pirates boss Jose Riveiro has sprung one or two surprises in his starting XI to face Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup final.

Orlando Pirates boss omits Mabasa

DStv Premiership Golden Boot winner Tshegofatso Mabasa is only among the substitutes for Pirates against Sundowns at Mbombela Stadium. Whether he’s not 100% fit is unclear but managers get paid big money to make big decisions and this falls into that category. Meanwhile, Lucas Ribeiro Costa is back for Sundowns after an injury issue. Relebohile Mofokeng, Mabasa and Kabelo Dlamini are the standout names on a strong Bucs bench.

Mabasa is still on the radar of European clubs

27-year-old striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has been flying for the Buccaneers after a loan spell at Swallows. Overall in the league, he scored 16 goals to become the country’s top marksman in 2023-2024. Naturally, this form has attracted some admirers. Mabasa’s agent Gary Cassisa has revealed interest in his client, including a failed move to Sundowns in January. Cassica says Sundowns face stiff competition from Romanian giants FCSB.

“At this point, his decision has to be considerate of his future as a player considering his age. Sundowns have the financial muscles to get him. But a chance at playing in the Champions League is not easy to resist.”

“FSCB want him. They are on top in the Super Liga and are likely to be playing in the UEFA Champions League. At the moment, I’m also talking to other clubs in Europe. But the idea is to help him keep his calm until the season is over,” he added.
