Kaizer Chiefs will soon have to finalise their decision to veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, who’s contract expires month end.
Khune has endured a tough and controversial season at Chiefs, which many feel will be his last as a player.
Khune and Chiefs not on the same page?
At the start of the season, Chiefs announced that Khune had signed a one-year extension to his playing contract. But it came as a catch. In the same statement, the club stated that it would also be his last as a player and after that, he would transition into a non-playing role. The problems then started when it became apparent that the shot-stopper did not quite get the message. This was evident when the veteran came out multiple times on social media, claiming that he can still play for many more years.
It then eventually came to a point were Chiefs gave Khune an ultimatum. Join the backroom staff or continue playing elsewhere. And after finally playing, what now is increasingly looking like his last game, it is decision time. The former Bafana Bafana international came on for the last 20 minutes of the team’s last home match, a 0-0 draw against Polokwane City. This was also an occasion that the club used to thank him for his 25-years of services.
But it may be 25 and out, with news that Khune is still not ready to hang up his gloves. Now according to Soccer-Laduma, should he leave Chiefs, Sekhukhune United are back monitoring the situation!
Sekhukhune an option?
“With no clarity between the Ventersdorp-born goalkeeper and his boyhood club, Sekhukhune United are believed to be monitoring the player’s situation, ready to pounce on Khune should he part ways with Amakhosi.” Wrote the publication.
Sekhukhune being in the background, should give Khune a little bit more leverage in his talks with Chiefs.
