The backpack find came after Mosley’s wife Clare Bailey confirmed her husband had taken the wrong route on a hike and collapsed just short of reaching a marina in a place where his body “couldn’t easily be seen”.
Photos capture officials retrieving the backpack with which Mosley was last spotted from the boulders on the hill, footage obtained by The Sun shows.
On Sunday morning, his body was found on rocky terrain just metres from a marina and beach bar, ending a four-day search, that included aircraft, drones and sniffer dogs.
Mosley was last seen alive at 1.30pm on Wednesday after he set off on a walk alone along a coastal path.
Mosley was later seen on CCTV footage in the town of Pedi, walking underneath an umbrella amid 37C heat.
A coroner is set to undertake an examination on the body to determine Mosley’s cause of death, which is expected to be completed within the next couple of weeks.
However, on Monday, the UK’s Daily Mail journalist Nick Pisa, who is reporting from Symi, appeared on Sunrise, saying it was believed his cause of death may have been a heart attack.
“(His death) appears to have been sadly a classic case of some sort of medical episode,” Pisa told Sunrise.
“We’re hearing this evening from the coroner into the investigation, he had some sort of medical episode. Some sort of heart attack or he was perhaps affected by the heat.
“The temperature that afternoon was approaching 40C.
“There’s no suggestion of foul play at all. They ruled that out completely.”
In a statement issued on her behalf, Mosley’s wife, Dr Clare Bailey, confirmed her husband took the wrong route on a hike and collapsed just short of reaching a marina in a place where his body “couldn’t easily be seen”.
“It’s devastating to have lost Michael, my wonderful, funny, kind and brilliant husband. We had an incredibly lucky life together. We loved each other very much and were so happy together,” she said.
“We’re taking comfort in the fact that he so very nearly made it.
“Michael was an adventurous man, it’s part of what made him so special.”
Bailey said the family had been “hugely comforted by the outpouring of love”, adding: “It’s clear that Michael meant a huge amount to so many of you.”
“We are so grateful to the extraordinary people on Symi who have worked tirelessly to help find him. Some of these people on the island, who hadn’t even heard of Michael, worked from dawn till dusk unasked,” she said.
“I feel so lucky to have our children and my amazing friends. Most of all, I feel so lucky to have had this life with Michael.”
Mosley was one of the UK’s most respected TV doctors, best known for advocating for the 5:2 diet.
He was the author of weight loss books The Fast 800, The Fast 800 Keto and The Fast Diet.
