Kota Magic: Why the city continues to attract India’s brightest minds

Kota in Rajasthan continues to be a beacon of hope for countless aspirants aiming to crack some of India’s toughest entrance exams like NEET and JEE. The journey of Aman Mahavar exemplifies why Kota remains a magnet for these aspirants.

Aman’s story is not your typical rise-from-adversity tale. As reported by TOI, he faced seven failed attempts at NEET until 2022 and seemed destined to return to his job as a postman in Bikaner. However, a chance opportunity changed his fate. Aman heard about Motion Education’s scholarship lottery while working in a post office, filled out the form, and was selected. This unexpected break put his dream back on track.

Having worked various jobs since his school days to support his mother, Aman finally cracked NEET on his eighth attempt in 2023, securing a seat at GMC Medical College in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram.

“It’s the best thing to have happened to me. I know the respect a doctor gets,” he told TOI.

Kota’s Coaching Institutes: The Success Catalysts

Aman is not alone in his transformation. Many students attribute their success in JEE Mains, JEE Advanced, and NEET to the structured and personalised teaching methods of Kota’s coaching institutes. For instance, Ved Sunil Kumar Shinde, the all-India topper in NEET UG 2024, credits Allen Career Institute in Kota for shaping his mindset and reducing the intimidation of competitive exams.

“We were motivated to compete in a healthy manner. Preparing for NEET at Allen proved the turning point for me, also helping me in the board exams. I did well in both,” Ved told TOI.

Financial Support

These institutes, which have expanded their reach across India, focus on maximising students’ chances of success rather than portraying the exams as insurmountable obstacles.

Financial support is often provided for underprivileged students, with scholarships covering up to 90% of the annual fee in some cases. Allen Institute, for example, offers free coaching to selected underprivileged students from government schools.

“We try to make sure every student who wants help with studies specifically for these entrance exams gets proper mentorship. Children whose parents died in the line of duty are given education free of cost, no questions asked,” said Allen’s director, Rajesh Maheshwari.

As per a TOI report, Allen Institute operates a program providing free coaching to underprivileged students from government schools in mainly Hindi-speaking states. These students are chosen through a school-level examination. Successful candidates are brought to Kota, where the institute covers all their educational, accommodation, and living expenses. This year, 126 students were selected for the program.

A Support System Beyond Academics

Kota’s coaching institutes offer extensive support beyond academics. In 2023, approximately 250,000 students received coaching in Kota, with more than 85,000 new admissions by May. The city accommodates these students with around 4,200 hostels, 25,000 PG rooms, and numerous one-bedroom apartments, which are rented by parents and guardians.Institutions such as Allen Institute ensure that recorded lectures are accessible to students who cannot attend classes due to medical reasons. According to a report from TOI, Maulik Patel, a student at Allen Institute, who was diagnosed with cancer, benefited from these recorded lectures, allowing him to achieve impressive scores in both the Maharashtra state board exam and NEET UG.

Embracing Technology for Personalised Learning

Institutes in Kota are integrating technology to enhance learning experiences. Motion Education, for instance, uses an AI-based homework machine that generates personalised practice questions based on each student’s strengths and weaknesses. This technology helps identify and address gaps in understanding, ensuring thorough preparation.

Moreover, practical labs for physics, chemistry, and biology, along with digital classrooms and extempore competitions, bolster students’ conceptual clarity and confidence. This holistic approach prepares students not only academically but also emotionally for the rigorous entrance exams.
