Scots fanzone in Stuttgart extended amid overcrowding fears ahead of crunch Euros clash – but fans say it’s not enough

STUTTGART fans zone chiefs created a two-screen extension amid fears thousands of Tartan Army footsoldiers would be unable to see the historic Hungary fixture.

City chiefs extended the Stadtgarden hub into a car park inside the grounds of the university to allow another 2,000 fans into the area.

Two big screens and a couple of food and drink wagons were also wheeled.

It is thought that it will help cope with the huge influx of Scots desperate to see the do-or-die clash.

The move came after fan organisations raised the alarm over the size of the zone which is dwarfed by the main Schlossplatz area.

This is where 30,000 locals will get to see Germany take on Switzerland with both games kicking off at 9pm.

Speaking hours before kick-off, Graeme Baxter, 37, from the Association of Tartan Army Clubs, said: “We actually came out and met with the city in March as part of the fans group with the SFA and the SFA security team.

“We obviously knew the game was at the same time as the Germany match.

It’s fantastic they have done something because it wasn’t going to be enough

“So we identified quite early on the Germany game would be shown in the main fan zone and the Scotland game wouldn’t be aired there.

“So we pushed the host organisation to do something for the thousands of ticketless Scotland fans who we expected to be here.

“The Scotland fan zone is for around 10,000 and I believe they have got an overflow plan as well.

“There is a separate area being set up for the Hungary fans.

“But they are not confident that will be full so that is potentially beating used as an overflow as well.”

He added: “It’s something we have been pushing for months because we didn’t think 10,000 was going to be enough.

“It’s fantastic they have done something because it wasn’t going to be enough.

“Scotland fans will find pubs and hopefully the organisers will let fans know what’s happening by putting messages on the big screens here.”
