2. Le Villi – A Centennial Celebration of Puccini’s 100th Anniversary

This weekend, celebrate the 100th anniversary of Giacomo Puccini’s Le Villi – an opera-ballet that showcases the composer’s early genius – at the Sheung Wan Civic Centre.

Performed in Italian with Chinese and English subtitles, this two-act, rarely seen stage work was Puccini’s first, and has no shortage of enchanting melodies and dramatic flair.

3. ‘Call Me by Her Name’ at Wure Area

Explore artist Tracy Tsang’s poignant reflections on growing up at her solo showcase, “Call Me by Her Name”, opening on August 10.

The exhibition at the independent art space Wure Area delves into the alienating effects of gender, sexuality and religion on a young woman, with the title reflecting the contradictions and self-doubts that arise from being labelled the “other”.

4. Freespace Ensemble: Yellow Magic Orchestra Reimagined

Step into the electrifying world of the Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) at “Freespace Ensemble: Yellow Magic Orchestra Reimagined”.

This event at The Box at West Kowloon’s Freespace pays homage to the iconic Japanese electropop ensemble that had a big influence on the electronic music scene in the 1970s.

Under the creative direction of Hong Kong artist Hirsk, a talented line-up of indie artists including JU!iE, Daniel Chu and Cong Quartet will reimagine YMO’s classic tracks.

5. ‘Whispers of Signs’ at Artellex

Immerse yourself in 200 preserved neon lights and familiar shop signs at the “Whispers of Signs” exhibition this weekend.

Hosted at Artellex in Cheung Sha Wan, this exhibition is free but reservations are required, so book your spot in advance for the opportunity to experience the vibrant legacy of Hong Kong’s urban heritage.
