Witness to crash that launched two toddlers onto Texas highway thought they were dead

A man who recorded the aftermath of a major US highway crash that launched two young children onto the road says he feared they were dead.

The toddlers were travelling in a Jeep being driven by their father on Sunday when it collided with another vehicle, flipped several times and sent them flying.

The children, dressed only in nappies, were pictured stranded in the middle of the freeway on the outskirts of Houston, Texas, before witnesses ran to help.

Eyewitness Victor Cordova was heading home at the time and recorded the moments after the crash.

He thought the children were dead or could be struck by another car.

“I saw them kind of getting up and moving and trying to get up, I felt a little bit better … but I knew there was still some injuries,” he said.

An investigation revealed neither child was in a car seat at the time of the crash.

“They were just sitting in the back of the vehicle, not strapped to anything,” Sheriff’s Deputy Thomas Gilliland said.

Cordova, a father himself, shared the video to Facebook where it has been watched more than 13 million times.

He hopes it will remind parents to properly secure children in cars.

“For parents and for everybody, even if it’s a short distance, (you need) awareness. Make sure you secure your kids properly,” Cordova said.

Both children were previously reported to be in a stable condition in hospital.

Their father, 25, was treated for minor injuries and discharged.

The police investigation is ongoing.
