But the Edinburgh side have saw a number of bids rejected as they try to hold onto their gem for the season ahead.

But things have gone from bad to worse for Tony Docherty and his side as Celtic came into the frame.

Brendan Rodgers is touted to be interested in the Greenock born star who could help bolster the Parkhead midfield.

And SunSport revealed the Hoops could make a move, with Dundee expecting a bid from club chiefs this window.

And eagle eyed fans now believe they have spotted a clue into the saga has that has unfolded.

Dundee faced Airdrie in their League cup clash this weekend as they sealed an emphatic 6-1 win.

They progressed into the Quarter Final of the competition with McCowan getting two assists in the game.

Joe Shaughnessy is the current club captain but is out with a long term inury.

And that means McCowan has been handed the captains armband for the last number of games, including in the Dundee derby Premiership opener.

But with his future at the club uncertain, he was STRIPPED off the armband in the last 16 cup tie this weekend.

Trevor Carson was instead handed the captaincy role and, although technically the club’s vice captain, fans think this means McCowan has played his last game.

Taking to social media, one fan said: “McCowan was captain for the Inverness game when Carson was playing!”

And another replied: “Don’t tell me it’s happening.”

A third fan added: “McCowan no captain, think thats him after today!”

And although fans are sure this is the case, it remains unclear whether it is a sign of things to come.

McCowan inspired his side to a top six finish last season with 10 goals and five assists in 41 games.
