Nearly 3,000 fines have been issued across Glasgow since the Low Emission Zone came into force last month.

The figures revealed 2922 Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) were issued in June.

Drivers with a car that does not meet the requirements in the designated areas face a £60 fine that doubles with each subsequent breach.

The council had previously failed to disclose the numbers by rejecting a request under Environmental Information regulations.

It is understood the local authority wishes to keep confidential the exact location of cameras which catch offenders.

The penalties alone brought in £175,320 for the council.

It allowed a grace period for drivers committing more than one breach in a day before the penalties were fully implemented at the start of this month.

The Low Emission Zone (LEZ) affects old diesel engine and more modern petrol cars.

It covers the area of Glasgow city centre bounded by the M8 motorway to the north and west, the River Clyde to the south and Saltmarket and High Street to the east.

The motorway itself is not included in the LEZ.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council, said: “To allow for a period of familiarisation, non-compliant vehicles detected in Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone received a maximum of one penalty charge notice during the zone’s first month of operation, June 2023.

“Surcharging, which allows the penalty amount to double for subsequent LEZ breaches, started in July and will begin after the first charge notice can be expected to have been received by the vehicle’s registered keeper.”
