Guntur: Senior neurologist and director of Lalitha Super Specialties Hospital, Dr.P.Vijaya has assumed charge as president of the AP Neuro Scientists Association (APNSA) two days ago. She was elected as president for the year 2023-24 at the 30th annual state conference (APNEUROCON 2023) held at Kurnool.
Dr Vijaya is the 31st president of the association which was started in 1994 by Neurologists and Neurosurgeons of undivided A.P. About 655 Neuro-specialists are part of the state association. Dr Vijaya stated that she will strive to continue the legacy of the seniors to promote the specialty of neurosciences in the state of A.P in the form of academics, public education and CME for professional and education activities for students. APNSA under the leadership of Dr Vijaya selected “Brain Health for All” as campaign theme for the upcoming year.
Addressing the conference, Dr Vijaya explained that disorders of the nervous system are the leading cause of disability across all ages and second leading cause of death globally accounting for nine million deaths per year. “Five important neurological diseases are brain stroke 42.2%, migraine 16.3%, dementia 10.4%, meningitis 7.9% and epilepsy 4.9%.
Women and children are affected more in low-and middle-income countries and affecting the social and economic aspects of society. Many neurological problems are preventable with proper awareness, lifestyle changes and risk factor control,” said Dr Vijaya. She said that APNSA will highlight the value of brain health across the life course and how to protect it targeting all groups-children, adolescent, middle age as well as senior citizens in the next one year.
Dr.Vijaya said that they were looking forward to working with government organizations, NGOs, social support groups and professional organizations to achieve the goal.
