Chinese giant Alibaba has introduced a new section focused on made-in-Italy goods on its e-commerce platform, aiming to promote top Italian producers and boost their international business. Three hundred and fifty companies from several sectors, including food & beverage, beauty, home & garden and electronics, have already signed up to the ‘Made in Italy Event’, which will run until February 2024 on Alibaba’s app.

The goal is to enhance the visibility of and interest in Italian products, directing the searches of potential international buyers along a number of touchpoints, to browse the wide range of products available on the platform. After a start-up phase, all the initiative’s channels are now operational: from various dedicated showcases to the inclusion of products in the marketplace’s high-visibility sections, to the creation of product highlights facilitating new business opportunities for international buyers and Italian manufacturers.
Italian SMEs operating in the agri-food, fashion, cosmetics and furniture & design sectors will be able to use the blockchain-based product traceability tool developed by ICE, Italy’s Foreign Trade agency, which sets out product certifications and sustainability features, boosting and guaranteeing the value of Italian products on the global market.
“We are looking forward to many more Italian companies, especially SMEs, exploiting the opportunities afforded by the ‘Made in Italy Event’ in the coming months,” said Luca Curtarelli, country manager Italy, Spain and Portugal for Alibaba. He emphasised that the platform has “the unique ability to create a digital eco-system designed with manufacturers’ needs in mind, connecting demand and supply for products, even highly specialised ones, from a variety of categories.”
