Injured Port defender McKenzie inks contract extension

Injured Port Adelaide defender Trent McKenzie says there’s positives in being unlucky.

McKenzie aims to return for the first week of the finals after damaging posterior cruciate ligaments in his right knee last weekend.

It is the latest in a spate of contact injuries for the 31-year-old, who has signed a one-year contract extension to continue with the Power next year.

But McKenzie is taking a glass half-full approach, believing the ailments are poor fortune rather than a sign of a wearing body.

“The positive thing is it has been pretty unlucky, the injuries that I’ve had,” he said on Wednesday.

“So if I get some luck moving forward, that would be nice.

“The body actually, before these type of injuries, has been pretty good, holding up well.

“So hopefully, touch wood, that continues. I still feel like I’ve got a lot more football to give.”

AFL Match Centre

McKenzie played only seven games last year and recently missed a match because of an ankle injury.

Then came the knee problem in Saturday night’s away loss to Geelong – the fourth-placed Power’s fourth defeat in a row after a club-record 13-game winning streak.

“It’s something that I haven’t done before, this type of injury,” he said.

“It’s pretty tough to tell but going off the recent injuries and coming back pretty quick, hopefully that can happen again.

“I am just going to have to take it slow and steady, just try and really look after it and see how we go.

“The first final is in five weeks so that would be the aim.”
