CNN – Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California was briefly hospitalized on Tuesday after a fall, according to a spokesperson. This is just the latest in a series of health issues for the US Senate’s oldest member. The spokesperson stated, “Senator Feinstein briefly went to the hospital yesterday afternoon as a precaution after a minor fall in her home. All of her scans were clear and she returned home.” A source familiar with the situation said that Feinstein’s fall was a minor slip that did not involve steps or stairs. The 90-year-old senator was taken to the hospital out of caution. She is said to be in good spirits, informing friends that she didn’t even need a Band-aid. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer issued a statement, saying he spoke with Feinstein on Wednesday morning and that she suffered no injuries and is now doing well.
Feinstein’s health concerns have been mounting, particularly after her hospitalization for shingles in February caused her to be absent from the Senate for an extended period. When she returned in May, her office confirmed that she experienced complications from her recovery, including Ramsay Hunt syndrome and encephalitis. During a Senate hearing in July, Feinstein appeared confused and had to be prompted to cast her vote. Some House Democrats have openly called for Feinstein’s resignation, citing her absence from the Senate Judiciary Committee as a hindrance in confirming judicial nominees. However, her office disputes this claim. The decision of whether or not Feinstein should resign ultimately rests with those closest to her and the people of California.
