Fans serenade Matildas birthday girl Katrina Gorry after emotional week

Matildas star Katrina Gorry has celebrated her 31st birthday in style the day after one of the most epic FIFA Women’s World Cup penalty shootouts ever seen.

Lovingly known as ‘Mini’ for her small stature but powerful performances, Gorry was serenaded by adoring fans as the team entered the bus outside their Brisbane hotel on Sunday.

Holding a giant birthday balloon and donning a giant smile on her face, Gorry looked on at a crowd of Aussies all singing happy birthday.

“Thank you Brizzy,” Gorry wrote on Instagram.

Gorry was also presented with a birthday cake in camp where, in a beautiful family moment, daughter Harper tried to blow out the candles with little success.

“Just trying to say my birthday speech if you want to listen,” laughs Gorry, addressing some rowdy teammates.

“Thanks everyone, for being here, I didn’t think 31 would be memorable, but I guess it’ll be a birthday I’ll definitely never forget.

“Last night (the win over France) was really special, and to be spending my birthday week in camp is pretty special.”

It had been a difficult week behind the scenes for Gorry, with her fiancee Clara Markstedt’s father passing away.

Markstedt had been in Australia for the tournament but left last week to be with her family.

On Saturday night, Gorry was entrusted with Australia’s sixth penalty in the shootout against France and paid tribute to the Markstedt family after converting.

She was seen kissing her wrist tape, which featured a message to the family, and pointing to the sky.

“My fiancee’s dad passed away a couple of nights ago. So (the celebration) was for both of them,” Gorry said post-game.

“It’s been a tough 48 hours for me … my head’s been a bit everywhere, but I know that I have full support, not just here, but I know (from) her family in Sweden too.

“I just wanted to play for him and make him proud.

“I’m glad she’s there with her family, but I definitely wish I could be there for her.”

Markstedt shared a touching birthday tribute to Gorry on Instagram.

“Happy birthday my love,” she wrote.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better partner to do life with. You truly are my rock through everything. I love you always.”
