A baby giraffe was recently born at Brights Zoo in northeastern Tennessee without any spots, which is quite rare. The zoo is now asking the public to vote on a name for her. Giraffes are the tallest mammals in the world, standing at 14 to 15 feet tall. Typically, giraffes are born with brown spots, but this calf is an exception. Brights Zoo announced the birth on July 31 and has stated that experts believe she is the only solid-colored reticulated giraffe in the world. The zoo has reached out to other zoos to determine just how rare this giraffe is, with the only other recorded occurrence being in Japan in the 1970s. Pictures of the calf can be seen on Brights Zoo’s Facebook page, showing her standing next to her mother in stark contrast. The zoo is asking the public to help name the newborn by voting on one of four names, each with a Swahili meaning. Voting will close on Labor Day and the chosen name will be announced on September 4.
