Five young Balinese workers have died in a terrifying elevator crash in Ubud.
The workers — part of the housekeeping department at Ayuterra Resort — were inside the elevator when the cable of the lift snapped and dropped them 100 metres down into a ravine, about 1pm on Friday.
Two men and three women have been identified as Sang Putu Bayu Adi Krisna, 19, Wayan Aries Setiawan, 23, Ni Luh Superningsih, 20, Kadek Hardiyanti, 24, and Kadek Yanti Pradewi, 19.
Mr Ketut Suwiarta, a cook at the hotel, rushed to help the five after he heard screams and crashing sounds shortly after.
Three of the victims, who showed signs of life following the plunge, were rushed to the hospital, however, they tragically died.
Ubud police are investigating why the cable snapped. One explanation that has surfaced is that the cable broke because the lift was too heavy.
“It is possible that the steel cable was not strong enough to pull the load and the safety wedge or brake does not work,” Tribune News quoted Mr Uder as saying.Police are also looking into if the crash was caused by a lack of maintenance at the resort.
