Former Australian spinner Stuart MacGill has been charged over his alleged involvement in a massive cocaine deal related to his kidnapping.
The 52-year-old claims he was held captive and bashed inside the shed of a rural property in New South Wales back in 2019, an incident police allege is related to this latest charge.
The Daily Telegraph reports MacGill has been charged with one count of taking part in the supply of a large commercial quantity of cocaine, a NSW Communities and Justice spokesman confirmed on Tuesday.
That charge carries a potential maximum penalty of life in jail.
Detectives from the squad will allege the 44 Test veteran facilitated a drug deal between two people where one agreed to sell 1kg of cocaine to the other for more than $330,000 in 2019.
Investigators will also allege MacGill had a $1000 cocaine debt owed to one of the men cleared as a benefit for facilitating the deal.
The Western Australian-born former back-up to Shane Warne told police he was forced into a car before being taken to a rural Western Sydney property where he was stripped naked and bashed inside a dilapidated shed.
MacGill told police the men threatened to cut his fingers off with boltcutters and repeatedly punched him in the head.
Six people were eventually arrested over the ordeal with police stating publicly at the time that MacGill was an innocent bystander.
MacGill was released on bail and will face Manly Local Court on October 26.
Widely renowned as one of the best leg spinners in Australian memory, MacGill frequently had to settle for second place behind star spin bowler Shane Warne.
Although he didn’t have a regular place on the Australian test cricket team, he consistently played for the national side between 1998 and 2008.
