A Milwaukee bar has called an audible on a much-ballyhooed promotion that rewarded patrons with free booze whenever the Jets lost — and is now banking on replacement quarterback Zach Wilson flopping.
Owners of Jack’s American Pub have amended its “Jets Lose, You Win” season promotion after Gang Green lost their savior quarterback, former Packer great Aaron Rodgers, to a season-ending injury Monday night. Now they’ll reward customers whenever the Jets win a game.
“We’re hedging our bets, but we wanted to keep this going because we got so much attention heading into Monday’s game that we felt it was great – win or lose,” said Ryan Cooke, the bar’s director of operations.
Once Rodgers was sacked and carted off the field during Monday’s game, some of the roughly 300 patrons watching at Jack’s cheered. Many with bar tabs began guzzling booze assuming Wilson would resort to his past turnover-prone ways, the Jets would lose to the Buffalo Bills, and drinks would be on the house.
Instead, they were left with a hangover and huge bills once the Jets pulled out a shocking comeback win in overtime. The bar made a killing for a Monday – racking up profits they would see on a packed weekend night
“It was like someone pulled the air out of the balloon,” said Cooke, describing the morbid mood in the pub once patrons realized they had to pay.
