BHUBANESWAR: Peer teams from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) are scheduled to visit Utkal University in Bhubaneswar and Sambalpur University for assessment. Their three-day evaluation is set to commence on September 27. While the NAAC team will assess Sambalpur University, it will also reevaluate Utkal University’s performance.
Utkal University, the state’s premier institution, had requested reassessment after its NAAC grade slipped from A+ to A. It had achieved a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.16 for grade A, while it secured an A+ grade with a CGPA of 3.53 in 2016.
This downgrade to A grade had caused considerable consternation in the state, with many considering it an “embarrassment.” Subsequently, an appeal was filed with NAAC for a reassessment, and an internal review was conducted to identify the factors contributing to the drop in grade.
According to official sources from Utkal University, the institution is well-prepared to host the NAAC team. The team is expected to visit various departments and inspect the university campus’s facilities while engaging with key university officials.
Sambalpur University is also gearing up for its third cycle assessment. “We are well-prepared for the assessment. Our two centers of excellence (CoEs) have accomplished significant work, including over 200 publications in the last five years. Our research projects, valued at around Rs 8 crore, are another highlight,” stated Bidhu Bhusan Mishra, Vice-Chancellor of Sambalpur University.
The primary mission of the peer team is to meticulously evaluate the qualitative metrics outlined in the Self Study Report (SSR), which the university has submitted to NAAC. The NAAC assessment is based on seven parameters: curriculum, teaching, learning, and evaluation methods; research; innovation and extension activities; infrastructure and learning resources; student support and progression; governance, leadership, and management; and institutional management and best practices.
