A Tik Tok user who moved from America to Perth has been left gobsmacked that workers in WA get sick leave.
Kerrene Taylor was left stunned when she needed to take a day off ill in Perth after she previously wasn’t allowed to when she worked back in Washington.
Revealing the difference between her old and new work conditions she said in a Tik Tok video: “The biggest culture shock living in Australia is the work-life balance.”
She has decided to call Perth home and has been living her 10 years as a result.
Revealing her surprise that her boss had no issues with her needing a sick day, she said: “I needed sick leave today it was a non-issue which is the opposite of my experience working in the US.”
Many Americans employers also provide lower annual leave allowances compared to Europe and Australia but Taylor said when she was ill at work back home, it was treated as an “inconvenience”.
“I’m not made to feel like a burden,” she said.
Taylor explained: “In Australia, I’ve apologised for requesting annual leave and I’ve been laughed at by an employer. More times than not – if I need time off it’s okay and allowed.”
She added: “I’m sure there are great employers in the US – but it’s just one of those things where I’m really grateful to be here because I can be sick and take time off and it’s okay, it’s just something that happens because I’m human.”
