Essendon defender Brandon Zerk-Thatcher spotted touring Port Adelaide ahead of AFL trade period

Out-of-contract Essendon defender Brandon Zerk-Thatcher has toured Port Adelaide ahead of a likely move to the club during the AFL trade period.

Zerk-Thatcher officially requested a trade to the Power two weeks ago and was spotted at the Alberton headquarters along with club great Justin Westhoff on Tuesday

The 25-year-old is out of contract after his best season yet at the top level, having played 22 games.

Essendon had hoped to retain the South Australian and put a multi-year contract on the table.

Zerk-Thatcher was selected with the 66th pick in the 2017 draft, first earning a long run of games in 2020.

He finally established himself as a regular through the back end of last season and through 2023.

His imminent departure, which will require a trade, will be offset by the arrival of free agent Ben McKay from North Melbourne.

McKay last week signalled his intentions to exercise his free agency rights and join the Bombers on a multi-million dollar deal.

Port Adelaide are also hoping to land another key position player in Esava Ratugolea from Geelong.

The Power bowed out of the finals in straight sets after finishing the home and away season in third place.
