Corvallis Ore. • Multiple Utah coaches and players expressed the need for Utah to improve their passing game leading up to the game at Reser Stadium. Unfortunately, they were unable to achieve this and it ultimately led to their defeat. The 10th-ranked Utes suffered a humiliating 21-7 loss to the 19th-ranked Beavers. Throughout the game, Utah struggled to gain momentum or string together positive plays. Nate Johnson was benched in the third quarter after completing only 3 of 12 passes for 35 yards. Bryson Barnes took over but was unable to lead the team to a successful drive, resulting in a sack, a botched snap, and an interception. Johnson returned to the game in the fourth quarter after Barnes was ejected due to a roughing the passer penalty and a targeting call. The only highlight for Utah was a three-play, 55-yard drive in the fourth quarter that resulted in their sole touchdown. Overall, Utah only managed 198 yards of offense for the game. On the defensive side, Utah had moments of success, recording three sacks and 13 tackles for loss, but could not replicate the game-changing plays seen in previous games. With a record of 4-1, Utah will have a bye week before facing Cal on October 14th at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
