Addressing media inquiries, spokesperson Arindam Bagchi emphasized the global obligation to adhere to international humanitarian law and the shared responsibility to combat terrorism in all its guises. This reaffirms India’s enduring commitment to counterterrorism as a pivotal facet of its foreign policy. Prime Minister Modi had previously conveyed similar sentiments during a recent conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The conspicuous reference to international humanitarian law is a significant indicator of India’s evolving stance on the issue. It underscores the importance of distinguishing between non-combatants and medical aid personnel from the military during conflicts.
India has chosen not to advocate for an immediate ceasefire, treading cautiously to avoid appearing judgmental about Israel’s retaliatory measures against Hamas, taking into consideration India’s own encounters with cross-border terrorism. Simultaneously, India is wary of endorsing actions that might be construed as collective punishment against the Palestinian population.
India’s official stance on the Palestinian matter remains consistent. The country has consistently advocated for the resumption of direct negotiations, aimed at establishing a self-reliant, independent, and viable Palestinian state, coexisting peacefully with Israel within internationally recognized borders.Despite India’s robust strategic partnership and defense ties with Israel, the Modi government reiterates that its support for the Palestinian cause continues to be an integral part of its foreign policy.Regarding Hamas, which has earned the designation of a terrorist organization by the United States, India has left no room for ambiguity. The group’s assault on Israel is unequivocally classified as an act of terrorism.
India, a provider of developmental assistance to Palestine and an annual contributor of $5 million to the United Nations for Palestinian refugee support, has, at present, refrained from announcing specific humanitarian aid for those caught in the throes of the Gaza blockade.
