Greg Schiano may have tipped the world off to a potential Michigan cheating scandal roughly one month ago but no one listened.
Now, with Michigan in the crosshairs, his remarks seem much more interesting.
Michigan clobbered Rutgers, 31-7, on Sept. 23, and Schiano participated in a Big Ten Network interview while walking off the field at halftime.
Reporter Brooke Fletcher asked Schiano about Rutgers’ four first-half penalties and how his team could clean that up in the second half.
Schiano addressed the penalties, but then dropped the notable remark.
“There’s some stuff going on out there, so we got to slow it down a little bit,” Schiano said. “There’s some things going on that aren’t right as well, so we’ll talk about how to handle it.”
Unfortunately, there was no follow-up as to what things were happening “that aren’t right.”
That remark, though, is eye-opening amid this cheating scandal.
However, NJ Advance Media reported that Schiano’s remarks had to do with the officiating and were not an attempt to insinuate Michigan employed any devious tactics.
No. 2 Michigan is alleged to have violated NCAA rules by scouting future opponents in person at games, according to ESPN, which has been prohibited since 1994.
A source told ESPN that Michigan has used an “elaborate” scouting system to steal signs from future opponents since 2021.
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh denied the allegations, via ESPN.
“I do not have any knowledge or information regarding the University of Michigan football program illegally stealing signals, nor have I directed any staff member or others to participate in an off-campus scouting assignment,” Harbaugh said in a statement.
The Big Ten is monitoring the situation.
“The Big Ten Conference considers the integrity of competition to be of utmost importance and will continue to monitor the investigation,” the league said in a statement, per ESPN.
Michigan will aim to stay undefeated Saturday on the road against in-state rival Michigan State, and still has meetings on tap with No. 7 Penn State and No. 3 Ohio State.
Rutgers is 5-2 on the season, with its only other loss coming at Wisconsin.
The Scarlet Knights visit Indiana on Saturday.
