Philippe Clement should have been SENT OFF says Hibs boss Nick Montgomery as he claims Rangers had ’12 men on the pitch’

HIBS boss Nick Montgomery reckons Philippe Clement was lucky not to be SENT OFF in his first match in charge of Rangers.

The Belgian made his touchline debut at Ibrox and saw his team thrash Hibs 4-0 thanks to goals from Abdallah Sima (2), Nicolas Raskin and Cyriel Dessers.

But Montgomery took issue with Clement and match referee Don Robertson over a particular moment in the first half.

Not long after kick-off, a loose ball was heading out of play and towards the Rangers dugout.

Montgomery claims Clement stepped onto the pitch and touched the ball before it had gone out play.

He was infuriated at the time and gestured with the officials as to why no action was taken.

After the game he called out the Light Blues gaffer and questioned why Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes was sent off for a similar incident a couple of weeks ago, but Clement walked away Scot free.

Montgomery told BBC Sportsound: “Everyone can see that the ball had not gone out. I was standing on the line.

“Derek McInnes was sent off a couple of weeks ago when the ball actually HAD gone out and he stepped on the pitch, so you want consistency in everything.

“I felt today when that happened, it’s an incident where I don’t think I’d ever step on the pitch to control the ball.

“And if he had any doubt, there’s no way he steps on the pitch but from where I was the ball didn’t go out, the fourth official didn’t think it went out and then when that happens, you probably think it’s not gonna be your day.

“At that point, they’ve got 12 men on the pitch and that’s illegal.

“That’s not why we lost the game but I thought when that incident happened I was confused as to why it was allowed to happen.

“The worst thing about it was they got the throw in, and at Ibrox you don’t expect any favours but that’s not within the laws of the game so that was disappointing.

“I’m sure they’ll review that and be disappointed with the decision that they made but as I said, that’s not why we lost the game.

“We lost the game because of a sloppy first goal and after that we gave them a bit of momentum.

“Everyone wanted a party today and we helped them with that by giving away sloppy goals.”
