Canon EOS RP Budget Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera Pictures, Specificatoins Leak Ahead of CP+

Technology lovers have two big trade shows to look forward too at the end of this month. There’s MWC happening on February 25 in Barcelona, Spain and CP+, which is Japan’s biggest camera and photo imaging show slated to kick off from February 28. Just like smartphones, we’ve already got a leak of a potential upcoming camera from Canon. Press images and specifications have surfaced for a Canon EOS RP, which is reported to be a budget version of the company’s EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera.

Japanese blog Nokishita managed to get a hold off, what look like, press images of a brand new full-frame Canon camera called the EOS RP. It has even managed to get their hands on some alleged specifications, which points to the fact that it will be a budget offering, under the current EOS R.

Looking at the front of the camera body, it looks very similar to the Canon EOS R. However, the reported dimensions suggest that it will be a bit smaller and lighter at 440 grams, compared to 580 grams of the EOS R. We begin to see more apparent changes when we look at the top and rear shots of the leaked photos. The Canon EOS RP looks like it will ditch the secondary dot-matrix display and the ‘Mode’ button is replaced by a more familiar mode dial. The dial also shows the presence of the new ‘Fv’ shooting mode which debuted with the EOS R. The rest of the top-mounted buttons look the same and even have the same placement.

Canon EOS R Review

Looking at the back of the camera, the Canon EOS RP is said to have a 3-inch touch-enabled LCD display and even the button layout is very similar to the EOS R. However, the multi-function touch bar is conspicuously missing. Other than these physical changes, the internal specifications are also reduced.

According to the report, the EOS R will have a 26.2-megapixel full-frame sensor (down from 30.1-megapixels on the EOS R), Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus, DIGIC 8 image processor and a continuous shooting rate of 5fps. The ISO range seems unchanged at 100-40,000. It’s also said to have a OLED electronic viewfinder, Dual Sensing image stabilisation, RAW and C-RAW support, and will come with the 24-105mm f/4 kit lens, similar to the EOS R.

Along with the camera, Nokishita also got a hold of some of the upcoming Canon lenses for its RF mount. Last year, Canon launched the EOS R with just five RF lenses but at CP+, we should be getting five more lenses for the RF platform. Four of the five expected lenses have optical stabilisation, which include the RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM, RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM, RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM zoom lens, and a RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM zoom lens. The fifth one is a RF 85mm f/1.2L USM prime lens.
