This left many passengers stranded at stations across the country trying to buy tickets to get through the barriers.

But ScotRail revealed that there was issue with the ticket machines at stations as well.

A huge queue started to form at Glasgow Central this morning, with commuters saying only one station staff member was selling tickets to fuming customers.

Other stations affected by the outage included Edinburgh Waverley, Perth, Falkirk High and Linlithgow.

It is the second time in a week the app has caused issues for travellers.

A number of passengers took to social media following the rush hour travel chaos.

One person said: “I purchased a ticket on the app, was charged but no ticket issued. Will I be able to request refund? Machines also down at Crossmyloof station, Glasgow.”

Another wrote: “You’ve just took money off me for a return from Croy to Glasgow Queen Street whilst purchasing using the app, but no ticket is loading on showing. Will the money be returned?”

A third said: “We don’t have time to wait in a 45 min queue at Central for a ticket.”

While a fourth commented: “Barriers should be open, queues at Central are ridiculous.”

The train operator has apologised to commuters and said that the app outage has been reported for investigation.

And anyone who purchased a ticket through the app this morning which is now showing that you would like a refund for, call 0344 811 0141 (option 2).

It is believed Trainline, who power ScotRail’s booking engine, had a network outage between 8am and 9am which affected card processing and fulfilment.

This impacted both the ScotRail app and self-service ticket machines.

Phil Campbell, ScotRail Customer Operations Director, said: “We’re sorry to customers who were inconvenienced by this incident, and we share their frustration.

“Our network provider worked as quickly as possible to get systems back up and running and restore services on our app and self-service machines.”

The issue has now been resolved.

Last Tuesday, a number of ScotRail passengers reported issues when attempting to buy tickets on the app.

This caused huge queues at stations as people tried to buy tickets manually from the machines or a ticket desk.
