‘Class on Wheels’ to provide free computer classes for rural school students

Mangaluru: M Friends Charitable Trust, will launch ‘Class on Wheels’, an air conditioned bus that visits government schools in Dakshina Kannada district to provide computer literacy classes to the students free of cost. The bus designed as a mobile computer lab will be flagged off by Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader on November 18 at 8.45 am at St Gerosa High School in Jeppu.
Trust president Mohammed Haneef told reporters on Wednesday that the launch of the digital bus will mark the 10th anniversary of the trust which is involved in various social activities.The digital bus equipped with 16 laptops intends to provide basic computer classes to 5,000 students a year. The bus also consists of projector, a television set, music system, LED digital board, public announcement system, printer and so on. As many as 16 or 32 students can learn in the bus at a time. Two experienced teachers have been appointed to conduct the classes.
The digital bus is the brain child of Haneef Puttur who hails from Aryapu village in Puttur taluk and works as Cloud and Infrastructure manager in Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, Dubai. He expressed his intent to provide such a facility while taking part in a global contest. His idea became a hit and lakhs of people voted for him because of which he won the contest. He donated the prize money to the Trust members also pooled in for the digital bus that cost Rs 60 lakh.
Haneef said the bus will visit the premises of government schools to conduct classes between 9 am and 4 pm. Each student will be trained for 15-20 hours in phases. Every day, the bus will visit 3-4 schools and spend 60-90 minutes in each school. A syllabus has been formed and the Trust will spend Rs 10 lakh for this service every year. The bus will first visit the government school in Kunjuru near Panja where Haneef Puttur studied.
