Netflix’s Scott Pilgrim Takes Off brings back Scott Pilgrim and the Sex Bob-ombs, accompanied by Ramona Flowers and her League of Evil Exes. The anime adaptation, released two decades after the graphic novel and thirteen years after the movie, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, consists of a total of eight episodes. The series is set in Toronto and follows the story of Scott Pilgrim who attempts to win the heart of Ramona Flowers by defeating her seven evil exes, including Lucas Lee, Todd Ingram, Gideon Graves, Matthew Patel, Roxie Ritcher, and twins Ken and Kyle Katayanagi.
The anime has been produced by the award-winning Japanese animation house Science SARU, alongside UCP. The electric battles in the series are energetically underscored by electric guitar riffs. The original live-action cast has rejoined to lend their voices to their respective characters in the anime adaptation, including Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
In addition, a large guest cast was announced on the day of the launch that includes actors such as Will Forte, Finn Wolfhard, Al Yankovic, Kal Penn, Kirby Nick Frost, and others. The anime series has received positive reviews, with Chief TV Critic Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter stating that the series “looks and feels exactly like O’Malley’s books look and feel, which is hugely satisfying.”
The show features Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wills, Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, Brie Larson as Envy Adams, Jason Schwartzman as Gideon Graves, Brandon Routh as Todd Ingram, Mae Whitman as Roxie Ritcher, and Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel.
The anime series, co-created by Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, is executive produced by Scott Pilgrim vs. the World director Edgar Wright.
