Bethanie Subiaco: Western suburbs aged care home responds to COVID-19 outbreak

A western suburbs aged care home is responding to a COVID-19 outbreak as the virus’ eighth wave sweeps WA.

COVID-19 cases among residents at Bethanie Subiaco spiked from just three on Sunday to 19 on Thursday, The Post newspaper reported.

Bethanie interim chief executive Roule Jones said more staff had been rostered on this week to ensure “optimum care” was provided to all residents who were isolating.

“WA is experiencing an increase in COVID infections which unfortunately spreads to our aged care homes, despite excellent infection control and processes,” she said.

“Bethanie’s team approach to COVID outbreaks is professional and swift and, as always, the safety and well-being of our residents is paramount.”

Visitors to the home have to wear masks and undergo a RAT test on arrival. Staff are wearing personal protective equipment.

It comes after the State Government brought back mask mandates for staff and patients in high-risk clinical areas in WA public hospitals on Monday, including intensive care units and wards treating vulnerable patients.

It is recommended visitors and staff wear surgical masks in all other public hospital areas.

In the week to November 19, 510 new COVID-19 cases had been reported in WA, compared to 531 in the week prior.

“All consenting, positive residents have been provided with antivirals and are isolating in their rooms where possible,” Ms Jones said.

“The medical team of doctors and nurse practitioners are regularly reviewing and keeping updated on individual cases.

“Bethanie is in regular contact with all impacted residents and families and is also working closely with the public health unit.”
