New warning signs in pubs and footy grounds urge men to check for signs of 3 killer cancers

NHS cancer warnings will be put in urinals at pubs, football grounds and restaurants to encourage men to get checked for tumours.

Slogans printed on toilets’ anti-splash mats will tell punters: “Blood in your pee? Contact your GP practice”.

Urinating blood can be a sign of bladder, kidney or prostate cancers, which together affect more than 60,000 men a year in the UK.

Professor Peter Johnson, cancer director at NHS England, said: “Passing blood in your pee, even just once, shouldn’t be ignored.

“It can be a sign of cancer so it needs to be checked out by your GP team.

“This is just one of the many ways we are helping people to be aware of possible cancer symptoms.”

NHS chiefs want to alert more men and found seven in 10 use a public urinal at least once a week.

The mats will be put in thousands of toilets across England, including in shops and hotels, and will be seen millions of times.

Other symptoms of urological cancers include needing to pee unusually often, a burning sensation, difficulty emptying your bladder or back pain.

Dave Carson, managing director of P-Wave, which makes the urinal mats, said: “We are proud of this creative yet simple way to convey a potentially life-saving message.”

The NHS also teamed up with Morrisons this year to put cancer warnings in pants and bras.

Clinics are diagnosing a record 58 per cent of cases in the early stages one and two when they are more curable.
